Ending the Nightmare: A Different Vision of Human Rights - please note change of venue

Mark Gibney - Belk Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, Univeristy of North Carolina-Asheville, USA and Visiting Professor, Lancaster University, Law School

Professor Gibney is a lawyer and political scientist who has published extensively in areas of international human rights law, ethics, and refugee protection. His most recent monograph International Human Rights Law: Returning to Universality (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008), questions the foundations for current implementation of human rights, and argues that current law misses most of the ways in which states fail to protect human rights. In other recent publications he has tackled the double standards and hypocrisy that exist in US national and international moral positions, and he has contributed to the international discussions on the importance and usefulness of apology in international relations.

His background is interdisciplinary and this is reflected in his approach to international human rights and the need for rethinking these aspects of international relations.
