Knowledge Construction in Networked LearningDate: 23 April 2008 Time: 12.30 - 2.00 p.m. 'Knowledge Construction in Networked Learning Processes' Dr Maria Zenios, CSALT, Educational Research. Department of Educational Research Seminar Series. Wednesday 23rd April 2008, 12.30 - 2.00 p.m. Institute for Advanced Studies, Meeting Room 2. In this seminar I will present work-in-progress on research exploring possible ways in which knowledge can be being produced, managed, improved and applied in networked learning contexts. I will develop a conceptual background for researching knowledge construction in networked learning through examining learners' participation in knowledge advancement activities. I will explore knowledge construction processes using an analytical framework originating from data collected from the MSc in ALT programme at Lancaster and based on ideas around the notions of epistemic activity and epistemic fluency. I will argue that themes and meanings expressed within online messages exchanged between course participants as well as research projects and reviews undertaken as part of their assessment are representations of abstract knowledge which appears to be constructed both collaboratively and individually. Epistemic activities have a decisive role in knowledge creation and improvement as they add value to such representations. Finally, I will point to the importance of the contextual aspect in the process of knowledge construction pointing to the fact that knowledge construction emerges through interaction of the individual with the environment including peer learners, tutors and available resources.
