Making Space for Time

One-day symposium on temporality and materiality

All sociology postgraduate students, members of staff and visiting researchers are cordially invited to attend the Lancaster Sociology Departmental Symposium.

This one-day event brings together sociologists, archaeologists and historians to make some space for thinking about time in the social sciences. The five invited speakers - Graeme Gilloch, Andrew Jones, John Tomlinson, Judy Wajcman and Yoke-Sum Wong - will discuss various aspects of temporality and materiality, including the question of acceleration and speed, the socio-technical conditions of remembering, and the interplay between material culture and memory.

There will be three 90-minute sessions, followed by a 60-minute roundtable discussion, chaired by John Urry. Lunch and tea/coffee will be provided.
