LRDG seminar: Stella Kachiwanda -- Reading and writing among members of the Ciyawo Speaking Community: Do public information texts constitute their everyday reading?Date: 12 May 2008 Time: 1.00 - 2.00 pm Literacy Research Centre Seminar Series. Stella Kachiwanda -- Reading and writing among members of the Ciyawo Speaking Community: Do public information texts constitute their everyday reading? Literacy is in some cases linked to civic education as an indicator of linguistic and social inclusion. When Malawi attained democratic governance in 1994, both government and non governmental institutions began to produce public information texts on various issues such as good governance, human rights, health, electoral processes, environmental management, corruption and agriculture in various minority languages. The aim is to ensure that people of various linguistic backgrounds have access to information in their own languages so that they can critically engage with issues and institutions affecting their everyday life and participate meaningfully in democratic processes at both community and national level. In this presentation I discuss preliminary findings from an ethnographic study I did among the Ciyawo language community. The study looks at public information texts in Ciyawo. It foregrounds the people's literacy practices in general to see whether they have access to or make use of these texts. The study also examines how decisions on choice of media for the texts are made at institutional level and how the texts circulate to reach the targeted groups.
