Gender, Education, and the Body

Gender, Education, and the Body - A one-day Seminar

It is widely acknowledged that in recent years there has been 'an enormous surge of interest in, and writing on, the body and embodiment' (Braun, 2000: 511). However, as Paechter (2006: 127) and others (e.g. Evans et al, 2005) point out, the 'corporeal turn in academia seems barely to have registered in either the theory or practice of education'. Yet, a tremendous amount of 'body work' takes place in schools, as children's bodies in particular are regarded as bodies 'in progress' (Pilcher, 2007). This one-day interdisciplinary seminar will explore and discuss how as researchers we can understand and explore the gendered body as a fundamental part of identity. It will provide a valuable opportunity for those working in the field of gender and education to engage, and exchange ideas, with researchers working on issues of gender and the body both inside and outside of education.
