Part of the excitement about graduate research consists in discerning a research topic from a nearly infinite range of possibilities. Once chosen, we tend to excel at exploring the topic's substantive aspects. At some point, however, every researcher faces challenging questions about what they know (ontology) and how they know it (epistemology). These questions include: what constitutes reality? Is anything exclusive to discursive construction? Can observer and observed be separated? The aim of this workshop is to provide an open forum within which students can discuss these issues with regard to their individual topics of research. At the outset, we will outline the diversity of approaches to these questions developed by philosophers of science, and natural and social scientists. These approaches constitute an 'intellectual took-kit' to be deployed in developing the theoretical position that drives our research studies.

This workshop is free and open to all postgraduate students across the University.
