Online ethnography: A view from language-focused CMC research

Ethnography on the Internet is a many-sided trend. Terms such as 'virtual ethnography', 'netnography', 'cyberethnography' or 'webnography' all indicate researchers' attempts at transferring principles and techniques of ethnography to settings of computer-mediated communication (CMC). Such transfer is discussed in this article from the point of view of language-focused Internet research. I outline the aims and procedures of 'discourse-centered online ethnography', a combination of systematic observation and interviews which I developed as a complement to the analysis of logfile data. Drawing on my German-based research on CMC in two different settings (hip-hop and diaspora groups), I suggest that ethnographic insights may supplement and support the sociolinguistic analysis of textual CMC data in various ways, e.g. in reconstructing fields of computer-mediated discourse, participants' literacy practices, and their sociolinguistic awareness.
