'Where's the teaching and learning? Is it in the stuff?'

Departmental Seminar - 5th November 2008, 12.30 - 2.00 p.m., IAS Meeting Room 2, everyone welcome.

This seminar was prompted by Paul Ashwin's presentation earlier this year where he looked at the strangely separated worlds of "teaching" and "learning" research and posed the question of how they could be brought together. Paul developed his thesis further in a paper delivered at BERA in September 2008, entitled "Conceptualising teaching and learning interactions in researching higher education." Jonathan Tummons and Mary Hamilton use the perspectives of Literacy Studies, Actor Network Theory and Socially Situated Learning to propose that an "analytical gateway" for exploring this question is offered by the material artefacts and texts around which teaching and learning interactions are structured. We will begin by briefly presenting the theoretical concepts we have found useful in bringing teaching and learning together to create unified moments for analysis. We will then each present one case study from our own work to illustrate our approach. Mary will talk about Individual Learning Plans and Jonathan will discuss assessment processes in a franchised HE course.
