Beyond Clocks and Calendars: an exploration of time and educational researchDate: 26 November 2008 Time: 12.30 - 2.00 p.m. Venue: IAS MR1 'Beyond Clocks and Calendars: an exploration of time and educational research' Amy Burgess, Literacy Research Centre, Lancaster University. Department of Educational Research Departmental Seminar - Wednesday 26th November 2008, 12.30 - 2.00 p.m., IAS Meeting Room 1. Everyone welcome. In many educational settings daily life is dominated by clock and calendar time: bells, buzzers, lesson plans, timetables and schemes of work seem ubiquitous and are usually taken for granted by participants. Similarly, when time is considered as part of the research process, the focus tends to be on clock and calendar time, with researchers giving careful consideration to questions such as how often to visit research sites and how long to remain in the field. In this paper I will explore some alternatives to this quantitative approach to time, which entail taking account of its different qualitative aspects. I will also explore how time is socially constructed through the research process and through classroom activity. I apply the concepts of timeworlds (Adam 1995) and timescapes (Adam 2000) to data drawn from an ethnographic study of writing and identity construction in adult literacy classes, in order to suggest some possible benefits of adopting a temporally complex approach to fieldwork and analysis.
