Teaching Applied Drama: Politics, Perspectives and Practice

Date: 27 January 2009 Time: 10.00-04.00 pm

This PALATINE workshop will discuss the challenges and potential of teaching Applied Drama in a Higher Education context. The event will explore, in particular:

1) Teaching Applied Drama

This could include questions around the theoretical vs. experiential emphasis within the 'classroom'.

2) The Politics of Applied Drama

• Applied Drama initially developed from radical community-based theatre; what are its current directions and how is this reflected in a canon of work?
• Has the 'corrective' or rehabilitative emphasis of many community drama projects overtaken a formerly more radical agenda?
• Can or should teachers assume that students engaged in Applied Drama are also engaged in the hope or struggle of creating a better society? Or are they solely involved in rehabilitating individuals? How might either assumption affect practice?

3) Perspectives within Applied Drama

• The challenges and potential of working with gender awareness, and cultural awareness: how are these approaches reflected in teaching practice?
• How can the needs of disenfranchised communities be met both in the classroom and the community?

The event also aims to raise awareness of women's contribution to the development of Applied Drama, exploring options for supporting and promoting the voice of vulnerable and disenfranchised communities of women, and investigating whether teaching with gender awareness can address women's particular problems, challenges or needs.
