Gendered Fields: Feminists Re-Think Neo-Liberalism: work/space and making a difference

We would like to announce two forthcoming workshops which aim to explore gender, difference and diversity in the context of spatiality, work, workplaces and neo-capitalism. The workshops are organised by Anne Cronin (Sociology) and Elaine Swan (Management) through the Centre for Gender & Women's Studies and are funded by the IAS.
Context:
Recent debates on neo-capitalism have emphasised its processual, performative nature (e.g. Thrift). But little attention has been paid in these accounts to the role of gender, difference and diversity in this processual 'making' or social generation. In contrast, feminist analyses have, for many years, explored how such differences are 'made' or 'performed' and act to make social relations. One important type of feminist analysis involves ethnographic accounts of how neoliberalism - in its various forms - is shaping women's work, their workplaces and their 'doing of politics' (for example, Heymann, 2006; Parrenas, 2001; Laurie and Bondi, 2005; Aguiar and Herod, 2006). Together, this work raises important questions about space as performative and gendered, the multiple spaces of neoliberalism and changing spatialities of gendered work, resistance and politics which we wish to explore at the two workshops.
Workshop One
Open to all staff and students at Lancaster.
Speaker - Prof Ros Gill (Open University)
Wednesday 14th January 2009, 2 - 6pm, Venue (Bowland North seminar Room 10)
Aim:
The aim of this half-day workshop is to create an internal Lancaster network of researchers and to use the work of Professor Ros Gill (Open University) to begin to set the agenda and generate debate on neoliberalism and gendered work, performative, gendered spaces and spaces of work. Professor Gill is author of Gender and the Media: Representations, Audiences and Cultural Politics and is well known for her work on gender, media and new technologies as well as for longstanding interests in discourse and narrative analysis.
Format:
Prior to the event, we ask all participants to read two articles by Ros Gill which can be obtained by emailing Jane Collins on j.collins@lancs.ac.uk (a third will follow shortly).
Ros will give a presentation to which Monika Buscher (Sociology, Lancaster) will be the respondent. This will be followed by general discussion. Issues and questions arising from this will be collated and brought forward into the thematic organisation of the second workshop.
There is no fee for participating in the workshop but you need to register in advance by emailing Jane Collins (j.collins@lancaster.ac.uk).
Places are limited, so please register promptly.
A second (all-day) Workshop is planned for 18th March - details will appear on this site when finalised.
