Feminists Rethink Neo-Liberalism: Work/Space and Making Difference

This is the second of two workshops organised through the Centre for Gender & Women's Studies by Anne Cronin (Sociology) and Elaine Swan (Management). This workshop builds on the themes developed in Workshop One in January with Professor Ros Gill. The workshop will explore the following themes: the multiple spaces of neo-liberalism; the changing spatialities of gendered work, resistance and politics; and space as performative and gendered.
· Professor Liz Bondi's research interests span feminist geography, social geography, geographies of health, and counselling studies. Her current research focuses on psychotherapies as socio-spatial practices, emotional and psychoanalytic geographies, emotions and qualitative research methods, voluntarism in mental health care, and geographies of subjectivity. She is also co-editor with Nina Laurie of Working the Spaces of Neoliberalism: Activism, Professionalisation and Incorporation, which helped inspire the development of these workshops. Other recent co-edited books include Emotional Geographies and Subjectivities, Knowledges and Feminist Geographies. Liz has also published widely on gender and geography and counselling practices.
· Professor Wendy Larner has a long standing research interest in theorising neo-liberalism and 'post-welfarist' governance. Drawing on interdisciplinary fields of globalisation, governance and gender and links to critical social theory, Larner has a strong commitment to empirical research. Her aim is to challenge conventional understandings of globalisation as an inevitable 'new reality' by showing that it is a contested and contradictory process in the making. She is the co-editor with William Walters of Global Governmentality: Governing International Spaces and has published widely on the New Economy, the fashion industry and neo-liberalism and governance.
Professor Maureen McNeil, Sociology, CESAGEN and Centre for Gender and Women's Studies will be the respondent to both speakers.
Papers for both speakers will be circulated prior to the workshop.
We plan to have dinner with the speakers after the event - please let us know if you would like to join us.
