Playing X-factor in the literacy classroom: on the prospects and problems of discourse genre interpenetration - LRDG seminar

We are studying continuity and change in classroom interaction in literacy lessons in one East London primary school. A major focus of this research is the study of interactional genres - the more or less predictable patterns that frame participants' understanding about what is and should be happening, how to act and what can be expected from others. There are good reasons to expect that interactional genres, which are habitual, embodied and connected to broader ideologies, institutions and cultural traditions, are consequential for the relative stability of classroom practice over time. However, it is easier to discuss interactional genres in theory than to trace their evolution in empirical data. In this session we will spell out some of these issues, showing both the prospects and problems of analysing interactional genres in video-recorded literacy lessons. This work in progress is part of the ESRC-funded "Towards Dialogue: A Linguistic Ethnographic Study of Classroom Interaction and Change" study.
