CGWS Seminar Series 2008/09: Emotional Labour

Date: 30 April 2009 Time: 4:30 - 6:00 pm

Vron Ware, Open University

"The Ins and Outs of Anglo-Saxonism: The Future of White Decline."

Although the question of Britishness has taken centre stage recently, the concept of Englishness appears to be more volatile and prone to crisis as a form of national identity. Using Zygmunt Bauman's concept of the ethnocultural, together with Robert Young's historical account of Anglo-Saxonism, I will consider the cultural politics of Englishness within the context of current anti-immigration discourse.

Bowland North Seminar Room 21.

If you would like to come for a meal with Vron at 6:30 on the Thursday evening at the Meeting House Restaurant in Lancaster. http://www.meetinghouserestaurant.co.uk/Current-Menu.php. Please let Jane Collins j.collins@lancsa.ac.uk know so that arrangements can be made.
