Science, Technology and Medicine: Studies in Mental HealthDate: 29 April 2009 Time: 2.00 - 5.00pm Venue: Bowland North Seminar Room 22 Science, Technology and Medicine: Studies in Mental Health Afternoon Workshop, Wednesday 29th April, 2- 5pm Bowland North Seminar Room 22 We would like to invite you to an informal workshop to explore ways in which Science and Technology Studies might contribute to studies of mental health. Scholars in Science, Technology and Medicine have explored various questions of particular significance to health and medicine, but little work has been done specifically about mental health/illness. Questions to which STM might have something to contribute include: · How is knowledge made in mental health? How is illness diagnosed? What counts as evidence? Who diagnoses illness and wellness? What is included / excluded from knowledge construction in mental health? · What is good care? What is choice in mental health care? · How are categories, such as nature/culture, body/mind, personal/social, public/private, negotiated? · What is the role of technoscience in the diagnosis, classification, management and construction of mental health? Our discussions will be aided by 3 'work in progress' talks from students working on mental health who draw upon Science and Technology Studies. Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
