Workshop: Jim Lantolf, Sociocultural Theory of Praxis in the L2 ClassroomDate: 13 May 2009 Time: 10.00-12.00 Jim Lantolf, The Pennsylvania State University,is offering a workshop entitled Sociocultural Theory of Praxis in the L2 Classroom, to be held in B80, from 10-12.00 on Wednesday 13 May. This will follow on from a lecture that Jim will be giving on Tuesday 12 May in Frankland LT from 4-5.30 pm, although attendance at the lecture isn't a pre-requisite for participating in the workshop, it will probably be useful. The workshop is restricted to all staff and research students, so if you are interested in participating, please register by sending me an email confirming that you wish to attend. The workshop will consider pedagogical research grounded in Vygotskian theory of praxis. Three specific studies will be presented: dynamic assessment of listening comprehension, a concept-based approach to the literature/language dialectic in a university classroom setting, dynamic assessment in an elementary school foreign language classroom. Before dealing with the studies, we will briefly review the relevant principles of Sociocultural Theory as well as the concept of praxis. We will then examine some data from each of the studies and discuss how it relates to the theory and what it might mean for future pedagogical practice. Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
