'Media Determine our Situation'; The implications of technological transformation for the contemporary university

Here are details of our final Departmental Seminar of the term, to be given by Charlie Gere, Head of Department of Media, Film and Cultural Studies at Lancaster University. The seminar will be on 'Media Determine our Situation'; The implications of technological transformation for the contemporary university, and will take place on Wednesday 10th June 2009, 12.30 - 2.00 p.m., IAS Meeting Room 1. Everyone welcome.

Abstract: One of the most valuable insights emerging out of poststructuralist thinking is that the human and the technical co-evolve. Much as there is nothing technical without the human, there is also no human without the technical. This close imbrication between the human and the technical has nevertheless been disavowed by Western thinking since Plato attempted to distinguish between interior memory and exterior writing to the detriment of the latter. Nevertheless it can be seen that how we think is structured by the means in which thought is preserved and disseminated. The modern university is a product of print culture, but many of the students it aims to teach are living in a post-print world of digital media. The challenge therefore for the university is to think how to teach such students, without compromising on some of the important legacies of print.
