Concepts of Health, Illness and Disease, Workshop 3: Culture-bound SyndromesDate: 1 June 2009 Time: 00.00 Venue: None (Call for Papers) CALL FOR PAPERS AND WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT Concepts of Health, Illness and Disease, Workshop 3: Culture-bound Syndromes Funded by the AHRC Tuesday 7 July 2009 University of Lancaster This one-day workshop will be the third event of a new Multidisciplinary Research Network on The Concepts of Health, Illness and Disease, funded by the AHRC. The network is managed by Dr Havi Carel (UWE) and Dr Rachel Cooper (Lancaster). For more information on the network: http://www.uwe.ac.uk/hlss/courses/philosophy/ahrc_chid_network.shtml Within the broader framework of the project, which examines the concepts of health, illness and disease, this workshop will focus on culture-bound syndromes. How can disorders be created and destroyed by cultural changes? Are such conditions as 'real' as those that manifest uniformly across cultures? How do culture-bound syndromes challenge concepts of health, illness and disease? Confirmed Speakers Dr Rachel Cooper, Philosophy, Lancaster Are culture bound syndromes as "real" as other disorders? Dr Ivan Crozier, Science Studies, University of Edinburgh "Koro, Genital Theft, or Whizz-Dick? Psychiatry, Culture-Bound Syndromes, and Penis-Shrinking Anxieties" Dr Stefan Ecks, Social Anthropology, Edinburgh Tutle - tbc Prof Roland Littlewood, Medical Anthropology, UCL 'Historical and Epistemological Issues, With Some Thoughts on Social Change and Western CBSs' Dr Ronit Yoeli-Tlalim, History of Medicine, UCL Title: Tibetan 'wind' illnesses and a few comparative remarks Call for papers Papers on the topic of the workshop from any discipline are invited. Each paper will be given 30 minutes for presentation and discussion. Unfortunately we are unable to cover speakers' expenses, although attendance at the workshop is free and refreshments will be provided. Please email a 500-word abstract to Rachel Cooper (R.V.Cooper@lancaster.ac.uk) by 1 June 2009.
