Livestock genetics industry and food sovereignty - Dr. Susanne Gura

The penetration of corporate livestock farming into the developing world and its displacement of traditional smallholders is causing socio-economic, genetic and environmental damage and poses threats to their food sovereignty. The genetics industry is consolidating, and heading for GMO animals and clones. The presentation will address the state of GMO animals and clones and the associated regulation in the EU and US; the state of livestock genetic diversity; consolidation and market penetration of the genetics industry; and present examples of livestock sector policies in developing countries and their possible impact on smallholders.

Bio - Dr. Susanne Gura is an agricultural policy advisor. Trained in human nutrition, rural sociology and development economics, she has worked for international and German development agencies and civil society organisations. She coordinated CSOs accompanying the FAO's Technical Conference on Animal Genetic Resources 2007 and the 9th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2008.
