Professor Barrie Bullen- The Mikimoto Memorial Ruskin LectureDate: 4 November 2009 Time: 6.00 pm-7.00pm Venue: Management School Lecture Theatre 1
The 2009 Mikimoto Memorial Ruskin Lecture will take place on Wednesday 4th November 2009. Speaker: Professor Barrie Bullen (University of Reading) Title: Ruskin and Rossetti: a queer friendship All members of staff, students and members of the public are cordially invited to attend this lecture. Bullen is Professor Emeritus at the University of Reading and now lectures at the Department of Continuing Education, Oxford University. He has had a long-standing interest in interdisciplinary studies and his books include The Expressive Eye: Vision and Perception in the Work of Thomas Hardy (OUP 1986), The Myth of the Renaissance in Nineteenth-Century Writing (OUP 1995), and The Pre-Raphaelite Body: Fear and Desire in Painting, Poetry and Criticism (OUP1998). He has published articles on Coleridge, Ruskin, Dickens, George Eliot, Browning, and Pater; he has edited Roger Fry's Vision and Design (OUP 1981), Clive Bell's Art (OUP 1987) and has compiled Post-Impressionists in England (1988). In 2003 he published a history of the Byzantine Revival entitled Byzantium Rediscovered (Phaidon Press), and in 2005 European Crosscurrents: British Criticism and Continental Art, 1810-1910 with Oxford University Press. He has contributed the entry for Dante Gabriel Rossetti for the new DNB. He is editor of the FOCI series of Reaktion Books, assistant editor of the new Oxford Companion to English Literature, and editor of the series 'Cultural Interactions' for Peter Lang. His critical biography of Dante Gabriel Rossetti will be published in 2010. Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
