No Marx without Engels! IAS WorkshopDate: 26 November 2009 Time: 2.00-5.00pm Venue: IAS Meeting Room 2 During the world crisis which started in the autumn of 2007, some ghosts have reappeared on the scene quite unexpectedly. Marx was declared dead and buried, so was Keynes. They are both back - as prophets and analysts of great crises in the past. So are some of the big projects and research programmes in the social sciences which go far beyond the established disciplinary patterns as we know them. Historical materialism is one of them. The founding fathers of this research programme were two: Marx and Engels. Without Friedrich Engels, who spent most of his adult life in Britain, in Manchester and in London, there would never have been anything like "Marxism". We are lucky because a completely new biography of Friedrich Engels by a British historian, Dr. Tristram Hunt, has been published this year. We will use the occasion to renew our acquaintance with Engels and to start rethinking Historical materialism and similar big research programmes, joining up with some of the biggest inter- and postdisciplinary research projects which are running today both in Europe and in Asia.
