'At university you celebrate the fact that somebody's bought a pen. Everyone will go out and get drunk. SPECIALS: A preliminary qualitative study into student drinking.' In this seminar we will provide an overview of our recent pilot study into British university students' alcohol use and place it within the context of the student experience. Although the 2004 Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy identifies 18 to 24 year olds as risky drinkers, and students are stereotyped as 'alcoholic layabouts' (Silver & Silver 1997, p. 14), there are surprisingly few qualitative studies that document assumptions, discourses and attitudes that influence many students to misuse alcohol. Drawing upon student focus groups and interviews with professionals in health, police, education, community and voluntary counselling services the SPECIALS project sought to: identify these discourses and assumptions; discern how city and campus influence student drinking behaviours, and consider how student drinking impacts upon quality of life and service provision on in these two locations. The project generated six areas of concern where we recommend stakeholders might work together to raise awareness, alter perceptions and influence behaviours relating to alcohol.
