After the success of the fascinating Environment 2.0 exhibition, which the Lunecy Review stated "everyone should see, absorb and respond to" the Public Arts at Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Arts (LICA) are pleased to welcome the next stunning exhibition in their 2009/10 season.
Looking Aside - Eventhood and the documentation of performance is a unique exhibition from major artists, across all disciplines. Rather than looking head-on to document their performance practices, these artists have worked sideways, creating new artworks that sit alongside the events they record or suggest. The results hover between documentation, performance and visual art, and are startling, unexpected and genuinely beautiful.
Featured artists and works include the world premiere of The SPILL Performance Tarot Exhibition - A limited edition deck of 78 tarot cards made by 'maverick' artists from around the world, working with photographer Manuel Vason and Orchestral Life, Tom Bangbala's revealing and intimate photographic portraits of musicians captured in the between times of performance. Also on display is work from Tim Etchells & Hugo Glendinning and Lucy Cash working with influential performance company, Goat Island.
We're marking the opening of the exhibition with an evening event (from 6pm onwards) that includes a glass of wine and concludes with A Family Double Bill in the Nuffield theatre - Performers Michael Pinchbeck and Simon Bowes each bring their parents to work for a duo of distinctly personal performance, reflecting on family histories, the passing of time and The Sound Of Music...
Michael Pinchbeck: The Post-show Party Show
Award-winning writer and performance maker Michael Pinchbeck takes his parents, Tony and Vivienne, on tour to recreate the post-show party where they met in 1970 after an amateur dramatic production of The Sound of Music.
Kings of England: Where We Live and What We Live For
In 2001, the father of artist Simon Bowes fell from a bicycle and forgot his name, where he was and where he lived. Performed by Simon alongside his 74-year-old father, Where we live and what we live for attempts to explore the passing of time and a world of forgotten people and things. This carefully crafted assembly of personal history and stories meditates on love, loss, happiness and how to get better with age.
