Contrasting interpretations of the 'Learning Community'

The 'Learning Community', at least in concept, is a fairly advanced form of participative pedagogy in that it assumes that students and tutors not only share in the creation of knowledge but in the structures and procedures which the learning community involves. I will briefly summarise the form of learning community in which I have taken part, its underlying philosophy and consider its 'darker side' - the less positive associations which accompany notions of community generally, not only within educational practice.

In particular, observations and experience of the learning community suggest that differences of various kinds are 'managed' rather than accepted and worked with. Alternative, less utopian interpretations of community perhaps provide the means of preserving the advantages of this participative pedagogy while avoiding its more coercive consequences.
