Language and Religion: departmental lecture by Professor Tony Mcenery

The departmental lecture by Professor Tony Mcenery will provide an overview of the work I am doing in the area of language and religion. The work is still at an exploratory stage. It splits roughly into four parts and can best be summed up by four basic questions I am seeking to answer. How is religion manifested in language? What role does language play in religion? How is language used to discuss religion? What does religion have to say about language? In responding to these four questions I am limiting my observations to Christianity only, though the work outlined doubtless has application within a number of, indeed perhaps all, religions.

The methods I am using to pursue this work include corpus linguistics, visual analyses and historical research. In this talk I will primarily focus upon the first two questions outlined above. In doing so I will draw principally upon a corpus based study of spoken British and American English and will outline a sample study of the role of language in religion using the framework for the analysis of visual images presented by Kress and Van Leuwen (1996).
