Impressions of the Palestinian Higher Education System - Faculty Signature Lecture Series

All members of staff, and students, are invited to attend the second in the Faculty's Signature Lecture Series. Bahram Bekhradnia, Director of the Higher Education Policy Institute, will be giving the lecture entitled "Impressions of the Palestinian Higher Education System".

In summer 2008 Bahram Bekhradnia was invited by the World Bank to undertake a review of the governance of the higher education system in Palestine. In this lecture, he will briefly describe the higher education system that he observed, but will focus on the extraordinary difficulties that the universities in Palestine face in the light of the Israeli occupation. He will not be talking about the rights and wrongs of the occupation or of regional or geopolitics more generally- these are not matters that he claims to know about. But he will detail and comment on aspects of the occupation that impact particularly on the higher education system. Biography

Bahram Bekhradnia became the first director of the Higher Education Policy Institute on its creation on 1 November 2002. HEPI is an independent think tank concerned with higher education policy, and has achieved an international reputation for rigorous and objective research and analysis, advising governments in 13 different countries. As a result, HEPI is now one of the most widely referenced and influential independent bodies concerned with higher education policy.

Bahram holds a degree in Literae Humaniores from the University of Oxford, an honorary degree from the University of North London and is a visiting professor at the University of Bath and the London University Institute of Education. Until recently he was on the governing council of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Until it was disbanded he was Special Adviser to the former IUSS Select Committee. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Times Higher Education.
