Nick Jones (Leeds University) - Berkeley's Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous

George Berkeley was an eighteenth century Irish Philosopher, who (in)famously denied the existence of matter. According to Berkeley, every objects like tables and chairs are simply collections of ideas in our minds. Furthermore, he thought that it was his philosophy, rather than the materialist philosophy of his opponents, which was in tune with common sense, and which avoided the snares of scepticism and atheism. Berkeley wrote Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous (first published in 1713) in an attempt to make his controversial philosophy more accessible to a popular audience. In this talk Nick Jones will aim to cast Berkeley's arguments in a user-friendly and sympathetic light, and to give you a flavour of the style and structure of this philosophical gem.

Nick Jones teaches at Leeds University. His publications include Starting with Berkeley (2010) Continuum Press.
