Biographical narratives and individual learning plans (ILPs): comparing 'personal' and 'official' representations of adult literacy learners

This seminar will present two case studies from a PhD project being carried out with adult literacy learners. The project focuses on two different representations of the adults involved: their biographical narratives, compiled from life history interview data; and their ILP paperwork, a documentary requirement of the current Skills for Life strategy (DfES, 2001). Using 'personal' and 'official' narratives as sources of evidence, the study explores the subject positions constructed by and for these adults, along with the meanings assigned to their literacy programmes in each. This seminar will also raise issues regarding conducting research in a low-trust environment, the ethical implications of life history interviewing, the audit culture and textualization of the workplace.
