Professor Vanessa's Peculiar Entertainments: Early Film and Edwardian Entertainment Professor Vanessa Toulmin is Director of the National Fairground Archive at the University of Sheffield Library and Chair in Early Film and Popular Entertainment. Originally from a show family who ran the Winter Gardens Fairground in Morecambe she founded the NFA in 1994. The Archive is now the largest collection of ephemera, photographs and books relating to the history of circus and fairground entertainment in the UK. Professor Toulmin has published many books on the history of early film and entertainment including the Electric Edwardians: The Story of the Mitchell & Kenyon Collection which she curated for the British Film Institute and her latest book on Blackpool's Winter Gardens: The Most Magnficent Palace of Amusement in the World She is currently special advisor to Blackpool Council on heritage and events and programmes Showzam: Blackpool's annaul festival of Circus Magic and New Variety which is held in February every year. Professor Vanessa's Peculiar Entertainments offers an overview of the world of illegitimate entertainment culture, out of which grew circus, sideshow and variety performers. Covering mysterious beasts, performing wonders and highly-skilled performers, this talk will be lavishly illustrated with rare visuals from the NFA, including moving footage of bizarre entertainments such as boxing kangaroos, dancing pigs, jugglers and contortionists.
