Cesagen Public Lecture on Food, Health and Sustainability with Prof Tim Lang

Professor Tim Lang is Professor of Food Policy at City University in London. A former hill farmer in the Forest of Bowland, for30 years he has both researched policy-making and contributed to it by working with public sector, non-profit and civil society organisations.
'There is increasing realisation that rich countries such as the UK are eating diets that are unsustainable. However we measure it - land use, water, energy/oil, biodiversity, equity of access - our impact on the planet through what and how we eat has to change. Today, policy is once more focusing on supply even though there is, in fact, plenty to eat. The problem is distribution and waste. But ahead, big problems do loom. That 's why defining what a 'sustainable diet ' means, and translating it into food policy, is one of the major of challenges we face. We need to be clearer about what we want thefood system to deliver.' Tim Lang
He's been a consultant to the World Health Organisation, the European Commission and the Food and AgricultureOrganisation, and a special advisor to four Parliamentary enquiries into food standards, obesity and globalisation. Since 2006, he's been Natural Resources and Land Use Commissioner on the Sustainable Development Commission. His co-authored books include: Food Policy (2009), The Atlas of Food (2008) and Food Wars (2004).
Winner of the Observer Food Monthly Award. Member of the Sustainable Development Commission.
This lecture will stimulate action and debate on building sustainable food systems for the 21st century.
