PPR Research Seminar - CANCELLEDDate: 1 December 2010 Time: 4.00-6.00 pm Venue: Bowland North SR10 CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS Matthew Guest (Durham): Undergraduate Students and the Religion Question: Culture, Identity and Conflict Characterisations of Christianity within UK university contexts, both in the media and in more scholarly analyses, have tended to foreground a zealous and conservative evangelicalism. This is understandable, given the publicity surrounding conflicts between university management and evangelical Christian Unions and the empowered confidence of student evangelicals, who appear to speak with a more united voice than any other Christian sub-group. This article challenges this understanding by addressing evidence gathered via a national survey of undergraduate students undertaken as part of the Christianity and the University Experience (CUE) project, evidence which suggests a much more complex picture. Contrasting with the evangelical narrative of radical conversion, a marking of moral difference from non-Christians and zealous Christian activism, especially through evangelism, our survey reveals a constituency of self-identifying Christians who are far less united, many of whom display a consistency of religious belief with their parents, a significant degree of alignment with dominant cultural understandings of morality and selfhood, and a discomfort with exclusivist value statements.
