PPR Research SeminarDate: 16 March 2011 Time: 4.00-6.00 pm Venue: Bowland North SR10 Helen Steward (Leeds): Actions as Processess The paper considers and opposes the view of Stout (1996, 1997, 2003) that processes are best thought of as continuants, to be differentiated from events mainly by way of the fact that the latter, but not the former, are entities with temporal parts. Stout's two central arguments for this claim are analysed and found wanting. A view of the event-process distinction is presented instead which allows the retention of Stout's central claims that (i) processes are metaphysically significantly different from events and (ii) that processes share important metaphysical features with substantial continuants, but which does not make the implausible claim that processes lack temporal parts. Instead, it is argued that processes share with substantial continuants a property I call modal robustness in virtue of form. The paper explains what this property is, and suggests that the category of process, thus understood, might be of considerable value to the philosophy of action. Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
