Katy and the internet: some perspectives on the embededness of internet use in a particular family's literacy practices - LRDG seminarDate: 16 November 2010 Time: 1.00 - 2.00 pm Venue: County South Room C89 (Meeting Room 7) Awena Carterwill speak on Katy and the internet: some perspectives on the embededness of internet use in a particular family's literacy practices. In this paper I examine the way in which four-year-old Katy's literacy development is embedded in the literacy practices of three generations of her family. I look particularly at the contrasting ways in which her parents and grandparents make choices about internet use for both professional and personal purposes, and the dynamic between these choices and their use of books. I trace the ways in which such choices are discernable in the production of a book Katy authored and show that, whereas for the adults of both generations learning to use the internet involved familiarisation with a developing technology, for Katy this technology is a normal part of everyday life.
