"Haunting Places"

"I am a ghost/ And as far as I know I haven't even died" (Morrissey, 2006)

Why do certain places haunt us so? And why do we haunt certain places?

This seminar will explore the ghostly traces that can linger in spaces and argue that in order to know ourselves and why we respond in the way we do to certain places we need to explore not only what is visible and there, but what is invisible and gone. On the one hand we could argue that places are tangible. They are simply there, something or somewhere physical that can be seen and touched and visited. Yet, although places may be tangible and 'real' to our senses, they are in no way fixed or transparent. Indeed the play of temporality, change and perspective on place leaves one wondering whether it is possible to 'know' anywhere at all.
