India Centre Seminar Series - Jugaad in India: Disruptive Innovation or Societal Risk?Date: 3 November 2010 Time: 5.20 pm Venue: LUMS Lecture Theatre 10 Lancaster India Centre invites you to attend an India Centre Seminar entitled "Jugaad in India: Disruptive Innovation or Societal Risk?", by Dr.Thomas Birtchnell, (UKTRC, CeMoRe, Sociology, Lancaster Universtity)on Wednesday 3rd November 5-7pm in LUMS LT10. In India, Jugaad is slang to 'make do' or for a 'quick fix'. It was originally a descriptive word for the cobbled-together vehicles used by India's rural poor, and the tolerance of these and other risky practices on India's roads. Jugaad has recently emerged in a different light as an indigenous and uniquely Indian cultural approach to business and management. It has been described as an integral part of the 'Indian Way' and the Confederation of Indian Industry (presents Jugaad as an approach that can be harnessed for value-generating solutions in global management. This presentation gives a background to Jugaad and explores the contradictions, ambivalences, and overlapping values between grassroots innovation and management practice. The following questions are addressed: Is Jugaad just another Guanxi? What does the appropriation of this slang-word mean in real terms for an Indian 'style' of management? Is Jugaad disruptive innovation or societal risk? How can we look critically at the sociological and political aspects of umbrella terms such as Jugaad? The presentation places Jugaad in the context of current understandings of development, innovation, risk and modernity and offers heuristic tools for evaluating global management philosophies.
