New forms of participatory environmental governance: experiences and challenges from Loweswater, Cumbria.

Thisis aone-day workshop about "new forms of participatory environmental governance". During the day we will draw on the experiences and challenges of creating a bottom-up community/academic/ institutional forum that allows us to work together around a local water quality issue in Loweswater, Cumbria. Our aim in this workshop, however, is to highlight and discuss the opportunities and challenges that this kind of group poses for 'higher-level' regional/national agencies and institutions, and to consider the conditions that might be needed for similar groups to work together on locally occurring environmental problems and to thrive into the future.

The workshop will bring together:

· people involved in policy making and implementation from the main environmental agencies at national level (defra, EA, NFU, NT, and others);
· people from those same agencies and local organisations in the North West (some of whom we are working with);
· local residents, businesses and agencies that live/work in the catchment of Loweswater, Cumbria
· researchers working on issues related to the workshop theme.

Apart from presentations and panel discussions from a number of key speakers (including Stuart Burgess (CRC), Peter Costigan (defra), John Pinder (EA), Will Cockbain (NFU), Phil Lowe (RELU), Bob Cartwright (LDNPA), Terry McCormick (ACT Cumbria) and others, the day will include 'open-space' sessions and structured discussions, giving plenty of room for a diverse range of questions and issues to be explored by all participants.

The day is free to anyone who would like to attend. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. We are grateful for support for this event provided by the Rural Economy and Land Use Programme (RELU, http://www.relu.ac.uk/ ) and defra. We very much hope to see you there.
