ESRC - The Net Generation encountering elearning at University - Dr Chris JonesDate: 1st December, 2010 Time: 12:30-13:50 Venue: Management School LT 02 A critical view of the use of the terms 'Net Generation' and 'Digital Natives' to describe university students. For two years from early 2008 until March 2010 I worked on an ESRC funded research project looking at first year university students in five English universities and their use of digital and networked technologies. The research examined popular notions such as the Net Generation and Digital Natives to see if the claims made in the literature were supported in the English university context and to provide a sound empirical picture of students' engagement with new digital and networked technologies. The project has now reported findings in conference papers and journal articles and this presentation will critically examine the idea of a Net Generation of Digital Native students based on the summative conclusions from the project. Are young people naturally able when they use new technology? Are older people always going to be at a disadvantage? The session will have plenty of time and space for the discussion of ideas. I will open up a discussion of the theoretical basis of the Net Generation and Digital Natives debate and whether these ideas can lead to productive developments or whether we have to look for alternative ways of thinking about the changes that are taking place.
