Ruskin Research Seminar - Howard Hull

Date: 5 May 2011 Time: 4.00 pm-6.00 pm

Venue: Brantwood, Coniston

Howard Hull (Ruskin Foundation)"Nothing Noble, Nothing Grand"- the place of modesty in the work of John Ruskin

Using the house and gardens as an opening metaphor, we will make a short tour of Brantwood noting a number of elements which I will then elaborate on in the context of a wider survey of the nature of modesty in Ruskin's work. Rather than specifying a particular text, I would like to invite everyone to bring with them a passage which in their view highlights an illuminating aspect of modesty (or lack thereof!) in Ruskin.

This session will take place at Brantwood 4pm - 6pm (Brantwood, Coniston, Cumbria, LA21 8ADFor directions, please go to: www.brantwood.org.uk/visitingus.htm)

You may wish to arrive earlier and use this opportunity to view Sarah Quill's exhibition of photographs of Venice & Burano, which will be in the Blue Gallery.
