Literacy Research Discussion Group: Competing Discourses Embedded in a Dyslexic Child's Story Writing

Awena Carter (Lancaster University):The significant difficulties dyslexic children experience with reading, writing and spelling mean that often what they write on the page does not reflect what they think and understand. This dislocation between their literacy and conceptual development can lead to their being constructed in different and sometimes conflicting ways, both by teachers from different pedagogical standpoints, and by researchers. In this talk I use textual analysis and ethnographic approaches to reveal the three conflicting discoursal constructions of one dyslexic child's identity in her story writing. I use the materiality of a story book she wrote during the time when I was her dyslexia support teacher to reveal the ways the child is constructed by:
- The deficit discourse of dyslexia embedded in her school's understanding of literacy as a decontextualised skill.
- The creativity discourse embedded in my stance as a dyslexia support teacher.
- The socio-political discourse embedded in my stance as a researcher into my pedagogical practice.
