LRDG: The discursive performance of self in social network sitesDate: 28 June 2011 Time: 1 -2 pm Venue: C89, County South Mariza Georgalou (Lancaster University): Social network sites (SNSs) constitute a vibrant cultural arena which gives users unprecedented opportunities for self-presentation through the interplay of language and other semiotic means. In this talk I will briefly theorize identity and discuss the phenomenon of SNSs introducing relevant language-oriented research. Adopting tools from online ethnography and discourse analysis, I will then attempt to show how identity can be constructed within Facebook, presenting both textual and visual data from a Greek female networker's profile. My argument is that creating a text like a Facebook profile is not only a self-reflexive act, whereby the user selects and glues self-related episodes and attributes (Brake 2008: 286), but also a collaborative act, whereby the user's identity is shaped and validated by those with whom she shares a "friendship".
