The Mark of Cain - Shame, Desire and Violence a seminar by Professor Larry Ray to celebrate the contribution to scholarship of our colleague Professor David Smith.

Venue: FASS Building Meeting Room 2

The Department of Applied Social Science is hosting a seminaron Wednesday 12th October at 4.30pm to celebrate the contribution to scholarship of our colleague Professor David Smith.

David is now commencing his final academic year before retirement and this seminar is the first in a small 'testimonial' series we will be holding in his honour.

The seminar will be presented by Professor Larry Ray*, from the University of Kent, formerly of Lancaster University, and a close scholarly collaborator with David Smith.

The seminar will be held in meeting room 2 in the FASS building at 4.30pm on Wednesday 12th October.

Tea will be served next to meeting room 2 at 4pm and light snacks and wine will be served to lubricate conversation directly after the seminar from 6pm until 7pm.

*Larry Ray was in the Sociology Department at Lancaster University from 1976-98. Since then he has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent. His research and publications range across social theory, globalization, post-communism, ethnicity and the sociology of violence. He has also recently undertaken a project on Yiddish cultural and musical revivals, Holocaust representation and the politics of memory. Recent publications include Theorizing Classical Sociology (Open University Press, 1999), Key Contemporary Social Theorists (co-edited with Anthony Elliott, Blackwell, 2002), Social Theory and Postcommunism (with William Outhwaite, Blackwell, 2005), Globalization and Everyday Life (Routledge, 2007) and Violence and Society (Sage, 2011). He is President Elect of the British Association of Jewish Studies.
