This paper explores the possibility of moralconflict in Kantian ethics. An analysis of theonly explicit reflection on the topic in Kant'spublished writings indicates that,unsurprisingly, there is no room for genuinedilemmas. Moral conflict is limited to a clash ofnon-conclusive 'grounds' of obligation, whichexist only in the realm of wide duty. They are tobe construed as arguments that are correct inprinciple, though on occasion outweighed orcancelled out by weightier considerations; but itis difficult to determine what makes some groundsstronger and others weaker. Kantian ethics isthen shown to possess the philosophical resourcesto account for practical residue in such cases,and for a plausible form of agent regret.
