Art and Cultural Production within Institutions and on the Margins of Society - DELC Reading Group

Jacques Rancière, The Politics of Aesthetics, to be introduced by Greg Kerr (Dept. of European Languages & Cultures).
The text we will be reading is Jacques Rancière's Le Partage du sensible (La Fabrique, 2000). This has been translated into English as The Distribution of the Sensible by Graham Rockhill, in a publication entitled The Politics of Aesthetics (Continuum; 2004). Rockhill's translation is the text we will be using as the basis for the group.
Jacques Rancière is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the Université Paris VIII. A former student of Louis Althusser, Rancière has written books on a very broad range of topics including French labour history, political philosophy, cinema and poetry. The relationship between politics and aesthetics is a core concern of his thought and provides the focus of the text we will be reading. What Rancière refers to as The Distribution of the Sensible is something which links the spheres of aesthetics and politics, because it implies a primary organization of sensory experience that serves to delimit all human activity. By producing a consensus around the parameters of what is seeable and what is sayable, the distribution of the sensible necessarily produces forms of exclusion. For Rancière, politics is marked by the dissent from that consensus of those whom it excludes, and by the insistence of the latter on the visibility of the invisible.
The Distribution of the Sensible develops this theme over a number of chapters, which include analyses of the concept of modernity, art history, and the relationship between art and mechanical reproduction.
