International Law and the Death Penalty

This seminar will engage with the evolution of international law and opinon against the death penalty.It will present a multi-disciplinary analysis - through the fields of political science, philosophy, law and history - to consider how the death penalty has become antithetical to the norms of a civilized international community. Special emphasis will be placed on the vicissitudes of implementing international law and opinion within the United States Supreme Court,and the cases of Atkins v. Virginia and Roper v. Simmons will be analysed.

Dr Jon Yorke

Reader in Law

School of Law, Birmingham City University

Dr Yorke has spoken on the death penalty in various countries, he has advised the European Union, the Council of Europe and various NGOs,and he presented an overview of the most recent United Nations report on the death penalty to the 12th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna, April 2011. Dr Yorke is a member of the Foreign Secretary's Expert Group on the Death Penalty.
