'The Eclipse of Medical Care'

'The Eclipse of Medical Care' - OWT and Psychology Seminar

SPEAKER: Professor David Healy (Director, North Wales Department of Psychological Medicine, Cardiff University)

Abstract:A series of forces are currently tearing the NHS apart and significantly impairing the ability of your doctor to give you good Medical Care should you need it. The primary factors contributing to these developments are the availability of drugs under product patents, and on prescription-only, along with a requirement to demonstrate efficacy through controlled trials whose data remain inaccessible. These have laid the basis for a privatization of science, ghost-writing of the bulk of the medical literature and aggressive legal actions against anyone attempting to raise the profile of drug related hazards. This lecture covers the evolution of the problem and possible remedies.
