Paul Baker to give talk at Gender and Language Research Group

How can we analyse "context" and what does it add to an analysis? Using Jan Moir's "Stephen Gatley" article as a case study.

This talk is concerned with a discourse analysis of sexual and gender identity in the media, using a case study which is focussed on an article in the British newspaper The Daily Mail originally entitled 'Why there was nothing "natural" about Stephen Gatley's death' (16 October 2009). This single article is salient as it prompted the highest number of complaints to the Press Complaints Commission (over 21,000), although the complaints were not upheld.

I conduct a textual analysis of the article, examining how the author uses language to construct representations of Gatley and homosexuality, examining among other phenomena, use of metaphor and implicature. I show how the article references various discourses of homosexuality, as well as considering possible interpretations of such discourses.

However, I argue that it is not possible to analyse the article without taking into account the numerous ways that context determined what was written and how the article was interpreted. Iwill be considering how we decide what counts as 'context' and thendescribe a number of ways that context can be investigated, and how this can help us to explain and evaluate research findings.
