The Discursive Construction of Masculinity: Some Findings from Glasgow

Dr. Robert Lawson, Birmingham City University

The city of Glasgow, Scotland is often associated with physical violence, aggression and criminality, with these practices most commonly linked with working-class males. Unfortunately, this conceptualisation presupposes a homogeneity of masculine identities and experiences and offers a particularly one-dimensional (and problematic) view of Glaswegian masculinities. Drawing on conversational data collected during a three-year ethnography of a high school in the south side of Glasgow, this talk will examine the discursive construction of working-class adolescent masculinities and how adolescent males reject, contest and negotiate 'tough' masculinity. I show how masculinity is differentially constructed across four Communities of Practice and demonstrate how a detailed analysis of narratives can offer us an insight into the lived experiences of masculinity in Glasgow.
