Knowledge and Context in the Cognitive Approach to Discourse Study

It is now well-known that the production and comprehension of discourse, or the participation in a conversation, requires vast amounts of shared, socio-cultural knowledge of the participants. Within a large project on discourse and knowledge, this paper focuses on some aspects of the contextual management of knowledge in discourse as part of the dynamic strategies associated with mental context models, and the ways these control the epistemic-pragmatic appropriateness of expressed in text and talk. "Common Ground" has traditionally been one of the notions accounting for such shared knowledge and its management, but needs to be dealt with in a broader theoretical framework of epistemic discourse analysis.

*Professor Van Dijk is a renowned Professor in Critical Discourse Analysis; he developed the cognitive approach to the study of discourse which is now an established approach to the analysis of discourse. A bulk of his work focused on the study of the discursive reproduction of racism, the study of news in the press, and on theories of ideology and context.
