Rethinking Contemporary Gothic: Postgraudate Study Day 2012

The second annual Contemporary Gothic Study Day will be taking place on Friday 18th May from 10am - 4pm in Bowland North Seminar Room 23.

Programme:

10am: Introduction (Dr Catherine Spooner) and Keynote Lecture (Dr Kamilla Elliott, Lancaster University) 'Almost Alice: Tie-in Merchandise for Disney's and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland'

11am: Panel 1: Gothic Monsters (Chair - Sarah Post)

Chloe Buckley: 'Too gigantic to be seen, too horrible to be understood': The Weird Monstrous in The Power of Five and Skulduggery Pleasant'

Sunday Swift: 'Monstrous M*A*S*H: Khaki Gothic and Comedy'

David McWilliam: 'Demystifying the Folk Devil: The Rehumanization of Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins's Monster (2003)'.

12.30pm: Lunch

1.30pm: Panel 2: Gothic Media (Chair - Dr Liz Oakley-Brown)

Dr Stephen Curtis: 'You Have Been Saved: Digital Memory and Salvation'

Neal Kirk: 'Death 2.0: From Yahoo to Justin T.V.'

Xavier Aldana Reyes: 'Queercore to Hardcore, or the Trouble with Gay Zombies'

3pm: Coffee

3.30pm: Keynote Lecture (Dr Isabella Van Elferen, University of Utrecht) 'Gothic Music: Sounds of the Uncanny'
