Yvonne Prefontaine: Psycholinguistic processes involved in French as a second language speech production and perceptionDate: 20 June 2012 Time: 1.00-2:30 pm Venue: Bowland North SR 27 The Second Language Learning and Teaching (SLLAT) research group are pleased to announce the following presentation: Psycholinguistic processes involved in French as a second language speech production and perception Yvonne Prefontaine Drawing on recent research on L2 fluency and communicative tasks, this talk presents the mixed methods research design, methodology and measures of analysis of my PhD study examining the impact of utterance and perceived fluency in French as a second language. The research project examines the psycholinguistic processing of 40 learners at varying proficiencies studying French in a university immersion context in Québec. In this talk, I explain my research procedures, instruments and how L2 fluency is operationalized quantitatively and qualitatively. I briefly review the literature, drawing specific attention to Levelt's (1989, 1999) model of speech production and how it accounts for fluent speech. Then I present some preliminary results for reference. I show conclusions to the research questions and construct possible meanings for discussion, highlighting their relevance to psycholinguistics research and the wider applied linguistics field.
